Tracing visions and practices of use of AI systems in critical infrastructure

Abstract

This project attends to the increasing introduction of AI-based information and decision-support systems to organizational contexts of critical infrastructure. It explores how visions and practices of use of such systems are constructed, enacted, and negotiated within their anticipated contexts of use and their broader social contexts. The project is situated at the intersections of sociological research of technology and innovation, science and technology studies, and critical data and algorithm studies attentive to the contingency and social dynamics of digitalization processes. Designed as an explorative, empirically grounded project, it builds on qualitative methods, including interviews and focused ethnographic approaches.
