Emerging Technologies and the Future of Citizenship
This international workshop explores the challenges and opportunities that emerging technologies pose to existing theories and practices of citizenship. The goal is to support the front-line research in this nascent field and establish a community of interdisciplinary researchers interested in a new approach to thinking about citizenship regimes. How can new technologies remodel the meaning and essence of citizenship (in all dimensions—rights, identity, status), bring about new forms of governance, and redefine sovereignty?
The workshop focuses on four topics:
-- Emerging Technologies and Global Citizenship;
-- Blockchain-based Virtual Nations/Cloud Communities;
-- Algorithmic/Digital Citizenship;
-- Matching Systems for immigration Selection and Citizenship Allocation.
The first meeting is in June 2018 at the WZB Berlin; the second workshop will take place in March 2019 at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. Keynote Addresses will be held by Professor Lawrence Lessig (Harvard Law School) and Professor Beth Simone Noveck (NYU Tandon School of Engineering).
