Job description

The LATINNO Project, based at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, seeks master students in social sciences, public policy, and international relations, for

three-month spring/summer internships within the project
Innovations for Democracy in Latin America (LATINNO)

at 100% of the standard working hours (full-time, currently 39 hours per week)

This opportunity provides participants with valuable research experience in the fields of Comparative Politics, Democratic Theory, and Latin American Politics, and offers an insight into the work and academic professionalization dynamics at a prominent German research institution.

About the project

The LATINNO Project has produced the first database on citizen participation and democratic innovations in Latin America. It comprises data from 18 Latin American countries from 1990 to 2020. The data is coded for 43 variables which reflect the context, institutional design, and impact of democratic innovations.

The project is now in its third phase, and our collaboration will focus on the coding, update and management of large amounts of quantitative and qualitative data, the production of academic and non-academic publications, and the organization of an International Conference.

About the internship

You will join a small and active team whose working languages are Spanish and English. You will participate in team meetings and will be entrusted with supporting research tasks within the project according to one of the following profiles:

PROFILE I – DATA CODING

Your will identify and register cases of democratic innovations and citizen participation in Latin America. You will focus on updating existing cases and adding new ones to our database. You will interpret qualitative data and code it according to quantitative and qualitative variables, and will support the development of the organization, conservation and publication strategy for our data. You will develop solid empirical research skills and gain valuable experience in data processing and management.

PROFILE II – OUTREACH

You will support the development of an outreach campaign to help with the dissemination of our research to non-academic audiences. You will participate in the development of a social media strategy and our monthly newsletter. You will expand your network to academic and non-academic contacts in 18 Latin American countries.

Eligibility

All applicants should meet the following conditions:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor (5+ semesters completed) or Master program in political science, public policy, international relations, or related fields
  • a document from the university confirming that the internship is a mandatory component of the degree
  • Fluency (native-speaker level) in Spanish (or Portuguese)
  • Solid English writing skills
  • Excellent command of Office Package.

The following additional skills for the respective profiles would be appreciated, but are not required:

PROFILE I

  • Previous experience with qualitative empirical research, or
  • Good command of STATA or R.

PROFILE II

  • Previous experience in social media management or journalism,
  • Experience or interest in academic outreach and communication with civil society organizations.

Payment

Compensation of € 670,00 per month.
