Research Unit
Regulation of Work

This unit is responsible for the study of the profound changes in the structures, institutions, and forms of work in society and the forces driving these changes, new lines of conflict, alternative paths of development and future perspectives on work. Indications of the changes appeared in the late 1970s and gathered momentum thereafter. They were studied first for their political and policy-related aspects in the program on improvement in the quality of work life. Other aspects followed in the late 1980s, especially matters of regulation theory-new demands of competition and related changes in production regimes. In the 1990s, theoretical questions about governance attracted more and more attention:

  • The emergence of new ways to coordinate and control process chains for providing services in the public and private sectors

  • What new forms of coordination and control mean for both institutional change and corresponding development of skills

  • Associated changes in the conditions and ways of organizing work in society

Professor Dr. Ulrich Jürgens
