Economic INSIGHTS Kick-off

and welcome of the new cohort of the Berlin School of Economics (BSE)

Panel discussion

On April 1, 2021, the Economic INSIGHTS project came into being. Funded by the Leibniz Association, INSIGHTS aims to support and promote the scientific communication of economic research in Berlin and to contribute to the transfer of their findings. The project will establish a platform of exchange between researchers, policymakers, the media, and the public. In addition, INSIGHTS will provide professional communication training and guidance.

We would like to welcome the incoming PhD students and research associates as well as the participants of the panel discussion on “Economic advice and the chances and pitfalls of science communication”:

  • Monika Schnitzer (professor at LMU Munich and chair of the German Council of Economic Experts),
  • Moritz Schularick (professor at University of Bonn and economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York),
  • Jan-Martin Wiarda (blogger and journalist specialized in education and research)
  • and the moderator, Ursula Weidenfeld (economics journalist).

The panel will discuss the importance of conversations about research between policymakers, researchers, and the public. How can researchers engage the public in a discussion about science in general and specifically about economics? How can research findings be made accessible to a general audience? When pressing policy questions come up and no research is available (yet), should researchers make educated guesses or should they remain silent? What are the pitfalls of communication and when are researchers heard at all?

Please note that the event will take place on-site at the WZB following 3-G rules and the hygiene concept of the WZB.

If you want to attend on-site, please register here.

It is also possible to watch the meeting online here.
