Family life in a 24-hour economy

Presentation by Dr. Anna Rönkä & Dr. Eija Sevón, University of Jyväskylä (Finland)

Like other Scandinavian countries, Finland has a high rate of women’s labour force participation, a progressive social welfare system, and lower levels of social inequality than other developed countries. In this pair presentation, Dr. Eija Sevón will present her empirical research on work-family reconciliation intheFinnish society with regard to: a) children’s daily life and family wellbeing (daily routines and rhythms as well as fairness in co-parenting); and b) factors that influence work-family balance, such as the availability and quality of child care and the predictability of parents’ work hours. Professor Anna Rönkä will then present findings from the Families 24/7 study, a cross-national research project on family life in the context of the 24 hour/7 day economy, including Finland, the UK and the Netherlands.

She is currently leading two research projects: 1) a Families 24/7 consortium study which concerns 24-hour economy from the perspectives of children, parents and day care in Finland, the Netherlands and the UK; 2) the second project approaches the challenges of non-standard working time from the perspectives of workers and managers.

Dr. Sevón is a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Education at the University of Jyväskylä. Her present research interests focus on young children’s daily family life, family relationships, well-being and parenting. She has received funding from the Academy of Finland for her post-doctoral research project on the topic of positive parenting and young children’s daily life.
