Akasemi Newsome is a Ph.D. Candidate in Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. She was a recipient of the Berlin Program Fellowship of the Free University Berlin and a guest researcher in the department “Migration, Integration and Transnationalization” from July 2010 to July 2011. During her stay at the WZB she has conducted field research for her dissertation: Trade Unions and Immigrant Integration in Germany, Denmark and the UK.

Prior to doctoral study, she received her B.A. in History from Columbia University and an M.A. in Political Science from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has also completed graduate courses at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Freie Universität Berlin. She has also held positions in philanthropy and corporate communications at Deutsche Telekom, the German Marshall Fund and the Russell Sage Foundation.
