Christin Jänicke
Christin Jänicke is a researcher at the Center for Civil Society Research. As a political sociologist, she studies the normalization of the far- right, right-wing violence, and civil society counterstrategies, with a particular focus on East Germany. She works in the project Organized Civil Society and Far-Right Interventions and co-led the transfer project Effective against the Far Right.
In October 2026, she successfully defended her dissertation "Resisting Normalization. Civil Society Responses to Far-Right Contention in Germany" at Freie Universität Berlin. In it, she shows that civil society is a key arena in which far-right normalization can advance but also be pushed back: by withstanding it within associations, federations, and local communities, and by actively countering it. During her doctorate, she was a DAAD fellow at the Center for Right-Wing Studies at University of California, Berkeley.
In her new project, she examines how state funding and regulation strengthen or undermine civil society engagement against far right. Together with Ali Jones and Nils Schuhmacher, she is also writing a book on antifascist movements, "German Antifa(s)," forthcoming with Routledge.
Her work is shaped by many years of practice in civic education for young people and adults and in counseling for those affected by right-wing, racist, and antisemitic violence. Previously, she conducted research at the Berlin School of Economics and Law on police responses to far-right youth in the 1990s. She teaches at Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Potsdam and regularly brings her research to policymakers, civil society, and the media.
