Dr. Tommaso Virgili is a and a Visiting Researcher at the Migration, Integration, Transnationalization Department of the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, where he previously served as a Postdoctoral Fellow. He is also a Senior Policy Advisor at the AJC Transatlantic Institute and a Research Associate at the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies.
His research focuses primarily on Islamism, Muslim integration, Islam and human rights - in Europe the MENA region. His broader expertise encompasses sociological jurisprudence, constitutional law and fundamental freedoms. He is the author of the book Islam, Constitutional Law and Human Rights: Sexual Minorities and Freethinkers in Egypt and Tunisia (Routledge, 2022).
Previously, Dr. Virgili was a 2023/2024 Fellow of the Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM) at the Université de Tunis and served as Programme Director at the European Foundation for Democracy in Brussels. He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Public Law and a Master’s degree in Law from the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, as well as a Master of Arts in Middle East and Islamic Studies with Arabic from the American University of Paris and Cairo.
