Real Laboratories – A theorisation of an urbanist scientific approach based on practice examples in Brazil and Germany
Abstract
(DFG Initiation of International Collaboration Programme)
The Project
Real-world laboratories (RWLs) have established themselves as an important approach in recent years within the scientific community concerned with (technological, urban planning, etc.) innovations. The RWL approach stands for transdisciplinarity, participation, and democracy. It is designed to solve practical problems and is primarily applied in sustainability research. In recent years, it has been implemented in various government programs that focus on best-practice examples. This approach prioritizes practical impact over scientific validity, which can therefore only be assessed qualitatively, not quantitatively. The present project pursues two main objectives: First, to identify objective evaluation criteria for Real-World Laboratories that specifically capture their impact; and second, to develop criteria based on a detailed analysis of ten RWLs in Brazil and Germany (5/5) and their evaluation processes. These criteria are intended to ensure the universal applicability and verifiability of RWLs.
Kick-Off
The project started on 10th March with a kick-off workshop at São Paulo´s Mackenzie University , hosted by the Brazilian co-lead, urbanist Profa. Dra. Ana Paula. The day following the kick-off we went onsite to Perus, a peripherical neighborhood in the very north of Sao Paulo. Here, the population struggles with frequent flooding, especially in the rainy season. The local mayor asked Profa. Ana Paula to mediate the implementation of a new drainage system with stakeholders like the civil defense, construction firms, the district administration and most of all, the population. In our first analysis session we discussed the differences and matches of RWL and Policy Labs, of which the drainage process in Perus would be a good example. We agreed to integrate the latter into our project as we consider Policy Labs as a distinct further development of Real World Laboratories with a stronger focus on implementation.
