European Exceptionalism

International Workshop

Thursday, March 17th, 2011, at the WZB, Conference Room A 310

Social Science Research Center Berlin
(Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung, WZB)

Organized within the framework of the Research Professorship "Rule of Law in the Age of Globalization" and the WZB Rule of Law Center

In Cooperation with I•CON - International Journal of Constitutional Law

It has become commonplace to lament about the state of the European Union, decrying its financial woes, economic sluggishness, technocratic heavy-handedness, neo-liberal flattening of citizenship and general democratic deficit. But can the European constitutional order also  be understood as reflecting a genuinely innovative conception of law and politics? And, if so, can it be understood as a model that, notwithstanding its imperfections, provides an example to the world as to what constitutionalism should become? If so, what exactly is innovative and normatively attractive about it and to what extent is it universalizable?
